A letterpress poster project exploring society’s emotional literacy around topics of grief and sadness
In moments of hardship, loss, grief, and sadness we’re often met with unhelpful, trite, and offensive words. I believe a lot of these things are well-meaning, just misinformed. Our emotional literacy for how to support someone in a difficult time is so very small. It’s not something we’re taught in school and is often only ever learned by going through something difficult ourselves.
In There, I Fixed It, I crowd-sourced things that were said to people in some of their hardest or darkest moments, letterpressed these words on posters, and ‘fixed it’ with the words they wish they had heard instead.
I offer this project as a way to help us all build an emotional literacy toolkit. I hear so often “I literally don’t know what to say to someone experiencing hardship.” My answer? Start here. Use these words as your guide. They come from real people, sharing their real experiences. This is for you.
