plant tags for humans

An watercolor project and expression of self-reflection for the #100daysproject.

When I moved to Portland, Oregon, I knew almost no one. I was in a new house, in a new neighborhood, in a new state. With so much extra time not socializing, I had to find something to do. I turned to plants. In my years of traveling, plant ownership never made sense. But once I had a home to put them in, I gravitated towards buying plants like a moth moves towards light. It wasn’t totally intentional. It’s just that every time I walked past a plant store, I’d go in to look and walk out with a new plant. In retrospect, I think it was my subconscious was looking for roots.

After one trip to the Portland Nursery on a particularly hard day, I found myself in my backyard, in the quiet of my own mind, carefully reading the little plastic instructional care tags on my new plants. Some wanted full sun, others wanted shade. Some needed watering daily while others needed to be left mostly alone. They were all so diverse, each with their own set of needs.

And I began to wonder: 'if I were a plant, what would my plant tag’s instructions for care say?’

I wiped my hands on a towel, headed inside to my desk and pulled out a pen, paper, and some paints to make my first plant tag. I started sharing them on instagram and was tickled with how much people liked them.

After a break from making these, I’ll be restarting Plant Tags for Humans as a daily practice for the #100daysproject. Join me on instagram (@planttagsforhumas) to see more starting January 2021!
